Spot-fixing: Sreesanth, Chandila and Chavan's police custody extended by five days

The three tainted cricketers arrested on charges of spot-fixing in the on-going season of Indian Premier League - S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan - were today remanded to police custody for five more days by a Delhi court. They have been in the custody of Delhi Police ever since they were arrested last Thursday.
1. Sreesanth on Tuesday claimed that he is innocent has done no wrong. "I have never indulged in any spot fixing and I have always played cricket in the spirit of the game," a statement emailed to the media by his lawyer Rebecca John said. (Read more)
2. The Delhi Police in court had said it wanted the custody to be extended as it had to make more recoveries and the accused were required to be confronted with each other. Sreesanth, reportedly, looked tense during the proceedings. (Pics: From cricket to court)
3. Along with the three cricketers, the custody of eight bookies arrested in connection with the case, was also extended for five days. Four other bookies were sent to judicial custody for two weeks as the Special Cell of Delhi Police said their custodial interrogation was over.
4. In Mumbai, actor Vindoo Dara Singh, son of late wrestler-actor Dara Singh, was arrested by the Mumbai Police for his alleged links with bookies accused of spot-fixing. The 49-year-old actor was sent to police custody till Friday by a Mumbai court.
5. Sources say he was named in the scam by Ramesh Vyas, one of the alleged bookies arrested by the Mumbai Police last week. Ramesh Vyas reportedly has links with Sunil Dubai, an alleged mediator between bookies in India and underworld don Dawood Ibrahim's brother Anees Ibrahim. Police believe he is a "prized catch."
6. Vyas has reportedly told his interrogators that Vindoo Dara Singh was friends with several influential bookies and allegedly facilitated them. Mumbai Police had reportedly taped telephonic conversations as evidence against him.
7. The Mumbai Police on Tuesday also arrested Alpesh Kumar Patel, a hawala operator, and seized Rs. 1.28 crore from him. Prem Taneja, a conduit for bookies who was said to be in close touch with Vindoo, was also arrested, Himanshu Roy, the Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) told reporters in Mumbai. 8. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition seeking a stay on the remaining four matches of the Indian Premier League, but asked India's cricket board to ensure that "cricket should remain a gentleman's game".
9. Slamming the BCCI, the court said, "Definitely there is some kind of irregularity. But the biggest problem is the lackadaisical attitude of the BCCI. It should stop. There has to be some scientific dispassionate and impartial approach to solve these problems."
10. Earlier in the day (Tuesday), the police arrested Baburao Yadav, a former Ranji player. He is accused of introducing an alleged bookie, who has now been arrested, to Ajit Chandila.
