Ahmedabad Test - first day's highlights

# Virender Sehwag's brilliant 117 off 117 balls is his highest score against England in Tests, surpassing the 106 at Trent Bridge in 2002.

# Sehwag's above knock is his 13th century in Tests in India - his first century after 30 innings - his last century was posted at Motera two years ago - 173 against New Zealand in November 2010.

# Cheteshwar Pujara (98 not out) has posted his second fifty in Tests and his second best innings in Tests, behind the 159 against New Zealand at Hyderabad in August 2012.

# Pujara and Sehwag have shared a partnership of 90 for the second wicket - India's second highest at Motera. Rahul Dravid and Sehwag had put on 237 against New Zealand in November 2010.

# Graeme Swann (4/85) has recorded his best bowling figures in Tests in India.

# Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag were involved in a stand of 134 - their first century partnership in 16 innings.  Their last century stand for the first wicket was 137 against South Africa at Centurion Park in December 2010.

# The above century partnership is the eleventh for the first wicket between Sehwag and Gambhir. Four opening pairs have registered more century partnerships than Gambhir-Sehwag pair in Tests - 16 by Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes,  15 by Jack Hobbs and Herbert Sutcliffe, 14 by Justin Langer and Matthew Hayden and 12 by Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss.

# Sehwag has posted his second hundred against England - his 23rd in Tests. His tally of 22 hundreds as an opener is the second highest amongst the Indian players, next only to Sunil Gavaskar's 33.

# Just three batsmen have posted more Test centuries than Sehwag in India - Sachin Tendulkar (22), Sunil Gavaskar (16) and Rahul Dravid (15). Amongst the players with atleast 10 centuries in Tests in India, Sehwag's average of 58.35 is the highest..

# While registering hundreds, Sehwag has maintained strike rate of 100 or more six times

# The 134-run stand is the highest by any opening pair at Motera.

# In the course of his 45, Gambhir has completed his 2,000 runs in Tests in India, totalling 2008 (ave.41.83) in 29 Tests.
