New Delhi:

Former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar said on Thursday that while he feels home teams should be given preference in having a say in the nature of the pitch, he also warned that it can and has backfired on India in the past.

Speaking to NDTV a day before the Mumbai Test, Gavaskar said that India should rely on its strengths. "I agree that the home team should have a say in the nature of the pitch for a Test, it can always backfire. It has back-fired in the past for India. Instead, India should rely on its strengths like a strong batting, spinners and the way Zaheer Khan and Umesh Yadav have managed the new ball," he said.

India amassed a mammoth 521 in the first innings of the Ahmedabad Test with huge knocks from Cheteshwar Pujara and Virender Sehwag.

Sehwag will play his 100th Test and Gavaskar said that he deserves every accolade that comes his way. " Every fan will include his name in India's all-time playing XI for sure."
