A look at the highlights on Day 1 of the Boxing Day Test match between India and Australia.

# Ed Cowan (68) became the second Australian to post a fifty or more on Test debut against India at MCG. Sam Loxton had made 80 in February 1948.

# Cowan's excellent knock is the fourth highest by an Australian opener on Test debut since January 1982 - the highest three being 162 by Kepler Wessels against England at Brisbane in November 1982; 159 by Wayne Phillips against Pakistan at Perth in November 1983 and 75 by Phillip Hughes against South Africa in February 2009.

# Ponting and Cowan were associated in a century stand (113) - Australia's third century partnership and the second highest for the third wicket against India at MCG - the highest is 169 between Don Bradman and Lindsay Hassett in January 1948.

# Michael Hussey has recorded two consecutive ducks for the first time in Tests.  In his previous innings against New Zealand at Hobart, he had posted a duck.

# Hussey's consecutive ducks are the first-ball dismissals.  Overall, he has posted six first-ball ducks in Tests.

# Hussey's 12th duck in Tests is his second against India.

# The batsmen with most ducks in Test cricket since January 2008 are - Australia's Mitchell Johnson - 14 in 68 innings and Michael Hussey - 12 in 85 innings,  New Zealand's Chris Martin - 12 in 46 innings and India's Ishant Sharma - 12 in 58 innings.

# Peter Siddle (34 not out) has posted his highest innings against India.

# Siddle and Haddin were involved in a stand of 63 (unbroken) for the seventh wicket - Australia's second highest against India at MCG - the best is 66 between Greg Matthews and Ray Bright in 1985-86

# Ricky Ponting (62) has posted his tenth fifty against India - his 59th in Tests.

# Ponting has emulated Dravid's feat of 98 fifty-plus innings - 39 hundreds + 59 fifties.  Dravid has posted 36 centuries and 62 half-centuries.  Their tallies have been exceeded only by Sachin Tendulkar - 114 - 51 centuries + 63 fifties.

# Ponting has amassed 445 runs at an average of 89.00, including one double hundred and two fifties at MCG - the highest by an Australian player against India at this venue.

# Ponting's aggregate of 1278 in 15 Tests at an average of 58.09 is the third highest at MCG - the top two being Don Bradmman - 1671 (ave.128.53) in 11 Tests and Steve Waugh - 1284 at an average of 53.50 in 17 Tests.

# Shaun Marsh has posted his second duck - in consecutive innings.  In the second innings of the Cape Town Test against South Africa, he had recorded a duck.

# Ed Cowan became the 427th player to appear for Australia in Tests.
