Australia sailed to a seven wicket win over Ireland in their opening Group B match of the World T20 on Wednesday. They reached the target of 124 in 15.1 overs.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss on a Sri Lankan wicket is more often than not the right call. And William Poterfield of Ireland called it.

But the decision seem to have backfired as the Aussie bowlers struck three quick blows to put Ireland on the backfoot.

Shane Watson struck in first ball of the match to send back Poterfield, followed by Paul Stirling who was scalped by Mitchel Starc.

Glen Maxwell and veteran bowler Brad Hogg joined the Aussie party as they picked up the next two wickets leaving it to the O' Brien brothers -- Nial and Kevin -- to rescue Ireland.

After his famous World Cup innings, much was expected from Kevin O' Brien. He raised some hope, but ultimately fell to Watson for 35 (29 balls) while trying to accelerate. Watson also took the wicket of Nial O' Brien to return with 3/26. Starc took two wickets for 20.

Some late strike from Nijel Johnson helped Ireland reach 123/7.

Watson, who walked in with David Warner as the opener, rounded off his bowling performance with 30-ball 51.

Ireland never looked to be in  the game, and an opening stand 52 runs only made things miserable for them.

George Dockrell and Kevin O' Brien picked up one wicket each.

The other team in Group B is West Indies.
