The format of the fourth edition of the ICC World T20 is same as it was in 2010. There are twelve teams participating in the tournament - ten Test playing nations and two associate members. They are: Australia, South Africa, England, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, New Zealand, West Indies, Pakistan, Ireland (Associate Member) and Afghanistan (Associate Member).
In the preliminary round, there are four groups (A, B, C, D) consisting of three teams each. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the Super Eight stage, which consists of two Groups (E, F). ÂÂ
In the Super Eight stage, Group E will comprise of top teams from Group A and C, while Group F will consist of top teams for Group B and D. Top seeded teams will play second seeded teams from the other group. For e.g: C1 will play B2 and D2, A1 will play B2 and D2, B1 will C2 and D1 will play A2 and C2. Top two from each Super Eight group will qualify for the semi-finals.
Each win gives a team 2 points, while an abandoned match means each team will be given a point each. The team that loses gets nothing. However, in case of a tie, the points are not divided and a Super Over decides the winner. This is applicable in all matches of the tournament - group as well as Super Eight.
Super Over: In case of a tied match, each team nominates three batsmen and a bowler. The team that scores the most in that over wins the match. In case of tie, the team that has hit the maximum number of sixes wins.
In each group, teams are ranked based on the following criteria:
1. Higher number of points
2. If equal, higher number of wins
3. If still equal, higher net run rate
4. If still equal, lower bowling strike rate
5. If still equal, result of head to head meeting.
