Fort Worth:
Stewart Cink fired a six-under-par 64 to grab the first round lead at the US PGA Tour's Colonial Tournament in Fort Worth on Thursday.
Vaughn Taylor picked up a stroke with a long birdie putt on the 15th hole to get to one under. He finished the day at even par 70.
Cink was swinging and thinking well throughout the opening round.
He began his bogey-free round with three straight birdies and was already five-under through eight holes.
His approach shot on the 14th hole set up another chance for birdie, which he took to go six-under.
He then carded a six-under 64, giving him the outright lead by a stroke.
Jim Furyk had a birdie at the 7th hole to move to three-under-par, and finished the day four-under.
Nathan Green started on the back nine, and sank a long birdie putt at the third hole to get to five-under-par.
With a birdie putt at the 18th hole, Stephen Ames completed a five-under-par round of 65 after being seven-under through the first 11 holes. Ames is tied for second with four other players.
Mark Brooks had an even-par 70, a round which included a birdie at the second hole. Peter Lonard is well placed, two strokes behind Cink. The Australian was one of eight players who carded an opening round 66. (AP)
