Button, who was the world champion in 2009, has won 15 races from 278 starts, making him the third most experienced driver in F1 history. He has been on the podium on 50 occasions so far.
Button is having a poor season this year, finishing among the points in only two of the 13 races. He retired from Sunday's Singapore Grand Prix due to a gearbox problem.
The reason behind why the 35-year-old driver may have chosen Japanese GP to announce retirement is due to his popularity among local fans. His Jessica Michibata is Japanese.
McLaren's reserve drivers Kevin Magnussen and Stoffel Vandoorne are now in the race to replace the Brit.
