14:30 IST: Hello and welcome to the live updates of the third Test, day 2 play between India and England.
All-rounder Hardik Pandya wreaked havoc as his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket took England by storm in the post-lunch session on Day 2 of the Trent Bridge Test. Pandya's figures of 5 for 28 tore apart the English middle-order as the hosts from 108 for 4 at one stage, slumped to 128 for 9. At Tea, England got bundled out for 161 with Jos Buttler (39) being the highest scorer for the team. Indian pacers in the second session of the day made full use of the overcast conditions. After a solid opening stand by Alastair Cook and Keaton Jennings in the morning session, pace duo of Ishant sharma and Jasprit Bumrah started the post-lunch session, bowling at terrific line and lengths. Ishant drew the first blood, dismissing Cook with a beautiful delivery angling across. Jasprit Numrah, on the very next ball, got rid of Keaton Jennings in similar fashion. Although Ollie Pope and skipper Joe Root tried to steady the England innings, but a poor shot from Pope on the leg side ended his stay at the crease. With an extended tea session, Hardik Handya went on a rampage, dismissing England batsmen at will. The entire England batting order collapsed like a pack of cards. Along with Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and Ishant Sharma chipped in with two wickets each while Mohammed Shami managed a wicket as well. England trail by 168 runs after the first innings.
Openers Alastair Cook (21 not out) and Keaton Jennings (20 not out) provided England with a solid start as the hosts were 46 without any loss at lunch on Day 2 of the Trent Bridge Test. Both the openers looked solid against the likes of Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah in overcast conditions. Just before the break, skipper Virat Kohli tried Ravichandran Ashwin but the off-spinner couldn't manage to get the much-needed breakthrough. Earlier, in the first hour of the play, India got bundled out for 329 runs. Resuming on their overnight total of 307 for the loss of six wickets, the lower order could only add up 22 more runs before the pace duo of Broad and Anderson wrapped them up. Stuart Broad, clinched the first wicket of the second day as Rishabh Pant (24) dragged a full length ball on to the stumps. Ravichandran Ashwin (14) followed him soon, getting cleaned up by the Stuart Broad. James Anderson did the rest by cleaning up the tail for England. England still trail by 283 runs in the first innings.
India captain Virat Kohli missed his century by three runs but had the satisfaction of leading an India batting revival on the first day of the third Test against England at Trent Bridge on Saturday. At stumps, India were 307 for six after losing the toss. A day of fluctuating fortunes ended when James Anderson, England's all-time leading Test wicket-taker, struck with the new ball to have Hardik Pandya (18) caught by Jos Buttler at second slip. That meant Anderson, who prior to this match had 60 Test wickets at Trent Bridge at just 18.95, had become only the second bowler after Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan to take 100 Test wickets against India.
Earlier India, sent in to bat at 2-0 down in a five-match series on a ground renowned for aiding swing, were in trouble at 82 for three come lunch. Chris Woakes took all those wickets en route to figures of three for 75 in 20 overs. But a fourth-wicket partnership of 159 between Kohli (97) and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane (81), that spanned more than 40 overs, revived India. Unfortunately for India, neither batsman reached three figures with Kohli -- who made a brilliant first Test century in England in the series opener at Edgbaston -- dismissed when he edged an intended drive off an Adil Rashid leg-break to Ben Stokes at slip.
