Containing big-hitting opener Virender Sehwag and putting up a good fielding show are part of Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Daniel Vetorri's plans to stymie Delhi Daredevils in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match here on Saturday.
"I think if we field well and limit some of the damage Sehwag can do that will be part of our plan. If we do that consistently we may give ourselves a chance," Vettori told reporters before a net session here.
"It is always difficult to play against Sehwag because he is a very good player of fast and spin bowling," he said.
On being slow starters in previous IPL seasons, Vettori said the team management had talked about it and found out that poor fielding had let them down at the start of last IPL and Champions League.
"Fielding was not upto standards (and) that didn't allow us to register wins. When we sorted that out we started winning," he said.
The RCB skipper said he was very happy with this year's team, which has been bolstered by Andrew Mcdonald and Vinay Kumar, who is making a comeback in the Bangalore side after spending a season with Kochi.
"Young Indian player Harshal Patel has impressed in the nets. Vinay is a quality bowler and Andrew is a good all-rounder coming in," he said.
Vettori hoped that RCB meet fans' expectations and go one step further this time around.
"Expectation is a good thing. Whenever you perform people want to see you perform even better. We have made pretty good improvements in the team."
Asked about Zaheer Khan's fitness, Vettori said he was confident that the ace pacer would go out and perform.
"He has been bowling a lot in the nets. He is slowly getting back into the fitness mould," he said.
Vettori said RCB expect West Indian batsman Chris Gayle to replicate his success from the last IPL.
"I think Gayle is probably the best T20 batsman in the world. He scored a couple of centuries in Bangladesh Premier League and unfortunately he was injured for South Africa series. But I know he loves playing IPL and playing for RCB," he said.
Vettori added that South African AB de Villiers would be donning the wicket-keeping gloves in Saturday's match.
Asked about the Chinnaswamy wicket, Vettori said he hadn't seen it, but hoped it would play as it did in the last IPL.
"Last year's wicket suited us. We enjoyed playing on it, particularly our top-order batsmen," he said.
On Virat Kohli, Vettori said the India vice-captain was a revelation in Australia and Asia Cup.
"The innings he played in Australia and Bangladesh shows what a quality player he is. He has grown from strength to strength since Champions League. He has established himself as one of the best batsmen in the world."
