India's star pacer Mohammed Shami picked MS Dhoni over the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as the best captain he played under. Dhoni is one of the greatest captains in world cricket. He is the only leader to win ICC's all three major white-ball tournaments -- the Champions Trophy, T20 World Cup and Cricket World Cup. While questioned about the best captain in the world, Shami named Dhoni by stating that he is the "most successful" skipper. It is worth noting that Dhoni called time on his international cricket career in 2020.
"Look, it is a tough question. These things start with comparisons, but you will say that the one who is most successful (is the best captain). So for me, it is MS Dhoni because no one has been as successful as him," Shami told News18.
Dhoni, who made his international debut against Bangladesh in 2004, went on to play 538 matches across formats during his 16-year-long career. He featured in 350 ODIs, 90 Tests and 98 T20Is for India. His last appearance in an international game came in July 2019, when India lost to New Zealand in the semi-final of the World Cup.
On August 15, 2020, Dhoni took to Instagram to announce his retirement from international cricket. "Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout.from 1929 hrs consider me as Retired," Dhoni posted a video on Instagram featuring snippets from his career.
Dhoni continues to play franchise cricket though. He leads Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. The cricketing great is expected to be seen in the yellow again during the upcoming season of the T20 event.
Talking about Shami, the veteran pacer is currently out of the team due to an ankle injury. He was not considered for India's ongoing five-match Test series against England.
"As of now there is little or no chance that Mohammed Shami (who is in the UK for ankle treatment) and Ravindra Jadeja will be fit for the remainder of the series," said a PTI report on the players.
