20.36 (IST): India's fielding wasn't particularly good today but their spinners have done exceptionally to restrict the West Indies to a low total here. The West Indian batsmen failed to find their rhythm as they struggled against the turn that this wicket provided to the Indian tweakers. As many as 14 runs came in extras, 12 of which were wides. MS Dhoni will however, take this performance with open arms as his batsmen have a fairly simply job at hand to secure two wins in two games.

1745 hrs (IST): Weather update - There is the possibility of slight showers which does not auger too well for cricket fans here. The maximum temperature has been hovering around the 23C mark.

1700 hrs (IST): While India may be banking on momentum to carry them forward - defeated Pakistan by 7 wickets, West Indies skipper Sammy is counting on his entire team to combine. According to Jamaica Observer, he said that playing as a unit had helped them in the previous edition. "Being defending champions what I can say is that we've gathered more experience. Last tournament, our senior players, our key players performed very well for us but the key was even though they performed for us, we played together as a team," Sammy pointed out.

High-flying India ready for the Gayle challenge

Their sagging morale lifted after a thumping win over Pakistan, Indian spinners will now have to brace up for the ever-dangerous Chris Gayle when the team squares off against defending champions West Indies in their second match of the ICC World Twenty20 here on Sunday.

A victory against Pakistan was just the kind of shot in the arm that was required before facing a team that has world's most devastating T20 batsman in Gayle. While a rampaging Gayle can take away the game at any point of time with his blazing bat, the Indian spin trio of Ravichandran Ashwin, Amit Mishra and Ravindra Jadeja will definitely pose a few problems for the 'Jamaican Marauder'.

Gayle has minimum footwork as he believes in stand and hit technique. With Ashwin successfully employing a round the wicket technique to bottle up batsman and Mishra inviting him to come out by flighting his deliveries, it will be a challenge for Gayle to devise a counter strategy. While spinners will hold the key, Dhoni would also expect that Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami don't bowl length balls to Gayle as it has a chance of consistently landing in the stands. (Read More)

 

India vs West Indies: The BIG FIGHTS

 

"I am not Jesus Christ. I don't know what's going on in his mind. I know he is really pumped up to play here," said Darren Sammy on Chris Gayle's mood ahead of Sunday's blockbuster ICC World Twenty20 clash between defending champions West Indies and India in Mirpur. This Group of Death clash will see a few 'personal' battles as India aim to overturn their poor T20 record against the colourful Caribbeans.

Gayle has been inconsistent of late. India will be keen to exploit this 'weakness'. If West Indies bat first, Mirpur will see a Gayle versus Ravichandran Ashwin battle straightaway. The Chennai off-spinner opened the bowling against Pakistan and the ploy paid off. It is likely that skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni will employ this masterstroke once again to keep Gayle quiet. In T20 cricket, it's not always about bagging wickets. If Ashwin can bowl an economical spell against Gayle, India would have won a big mental battle as the middle-order will be under pressure to score.

According to Sunil Gavaskar, Gayle and Dwayne Bravo will be the batsmen India will have to watch out for. Sammy, whose lust for sixes can be dangerous, also figures in Gavaskar's list of Indian 'enemies' in the Caribbean camp. The mood for a 'fight' was already set in a press conference on Saturday where Suresh Raina and Sammy traded verbal volleys. Suresh Raina, Darren Sammy and the mind games

 

West Indies captain Darren Sammy wasn't amused when he heard that Suresh Raina has dubbed his batsmen as "six hitters" and dared the Indian bowlers to stop them from hitting the maximums when they clash in the World T20 here on Sunday.

"We don't care much about what Raina thinks. If he thinks we are only six hitters, then stop us from hitting sixes," Sammy replied when asked about his batsmen inability to rotate strike against spinners.

As usual, the affable West Indies skipper seemed to be in good mood as he answered the questions with a bit of fun and a lot of seriousness. (Read more)
