IPL scandal: Mumbai police chargesheet on Meiyappan today
Chennai Super Kings' Gurunath Meiyappan, the son-in-law of BCCI president-in-exile N. Srinivasan, is likely to be charged for betting. According to police sources, there is no evidence of match-fixing against Meiyappan.
The Mumbai Police is expected to file its chargesheet in the Indian Premier League corruption case on Saturday. Chennai Super Kings' Gurunath Meiyappan, the son-in-law of BCCI president-in-exile N. Srinivasan, is likely to be charged for betting. According to police sources, there is no evidence of match-fixing against Meiyappan. Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf is also likely to be named in the chargesheet.
Police say they have incriminating proof against Meiyappan, including transcripts of (phone) call records, CCTV footage and documents used to obtain SIM cards for bookmakers. (Meiyappan likely to be charged for betting, gambling)
Meiyappan, along with small-time Bollywood actor Vindu Dara Singh, was arrested in May in the high-profile scandal and released on bail in June.
The IPL spot-fixing controversy arose in May with the arrest of Rajasthan Royals players Shantakumaran Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan by the Delhi Police for conceding more than a specified number of runs per over in return for money from illegal bookmakers. The BCCI also handed out a five-year ban to Royals' Amit Singh, while another Rajasthan cricketer Siddharth Trivedi got a one-year suspension. There was no decision on Chandila, who recently got out on bail. His role is still being probed, and a decision will be taken soon.
