IPL spot-fixing scandal: Gurunath Meiyappan likely to be charged for betting, gambling

The Mumbai Police is expected to file its chargesheet in the Indian Premier League spot-fixing scandal later this week. Chennai Super Kings' Gurunath Meiyappan, the son-in-law of BCCI president-in-exile N Srinivasan, is likely to be charged for cheating and gambling.
Sources say Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf will also be made a wanted accused in the chargesheet.
Police say there are incriminating evidences against Meiyappan including transcripts of the call detail records, CCTV footage and documents used to obtain SIM cards for bookmakers.
Meiyappan, along with small-time Bollywood actor Vindu Dara Singh, was arrested in May in the high-profile scandal and released on bail in June.
The spot-fixing controversy arose in May after the arrest of Rajasthan Royals players Shantakumaran Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan by the Delhi Police for conceding more than a specified number of runs per over in return for money from illegal bookmakers.
Last week, Sreesanth and Chavan were banned for life by the BCCI after being found guilty of spot-fixing in an internal inquiry conducted by the cricket board.
The BCCI also handed out Amit Singh, a former Rajasthan Royals player, a five-year ban, while another Royals cricketer Siddharth Trivedi got a one-year suspension in the scandal which rocked the Twenty20 league this year.
There was no decision on another accused Ajit Chandila, who recently got out on bail. His role is still being probed, and a decision will be taken soon.
