IPL spot-fixing: Pak umpire Asad Rauf to be named in chargesheet, suggest reports
The police claim Rauf provided strategy details to Chennai Super Kings' Gurunath Meiyappan, against whom, a chargesheet too will be filed.
The Mumbai Police is expected to name Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf in a chargesheet in the the Indian Premier League spot-fixing scandal, accusing him of cheating and forgery. Sources say that there is incriminating evidence against the 57-year-old cricket official who was previously dropped from the list of umpires chosen to officiate in the Champions Trophy.
According to media reports, the police have claimed Rauf - to be named 'wanted accused' - provided strategy details to Chennai Super Kings' Gurunath Meiyappan, against whom, a chargesheet too will be filed. An India Today report goes a step further and quotes police officials as saying that Rauf has been heard demanding gifts and their invoices over phone so that he can get the required customs clearance. The police have obtained these invoices and is expected to use it against the official.
Small-time Bollywood actor Vindoo Dara will also be chargesheeted, say sources, along with the other 21 accused. Meiyappan and Vindoo were arrested in May and were released on bail in June. In fact, Rauf's name is learnt to have surfaced after the arrest and questioning of Vindoo. "We have transcripts of conversations between Vindu Dara Singh and Rauf. Also, of conversations between Vindu and Pawan. In the conversation, Pawan informs Vindu that Rauf could collect the 'gifts' in Delhi from another bookie, Prem Taneja. We have recovered the invoices of these items and they are a part of our evidence against the Pakistani umpire," a source in the Mumbai crime branch was quoted as saying by The Hindu.
