NZ vs AUS, 1st Test Day 2 Live Updates
We are back. The two umpires make their way out to the middle as do the players. It will be Usman Khawaja and Steven Smith to open the innings for Australia. Tim Southee will kick things off with the new ball for New Zealand. Off we go...
... THIRD INNINGS ...
A sensational bowling performance from Australia to bowl New Zealand out for 179! The visitors have taken a massive first-innings lead of 204 runs. The Aussies have decided not to enforce the follow-on and they will come out to bat again. A disappointing batting effort from the hosts has put the visitors in complete command of this Test. In reply to Australia's 383, New Zealand were off to a dreadful start. Tom Latham was the first to perish and soon it got worse for them as Kane Williamson was run out for a duck. Rachin Ravindra, Will Young and Daryl Mitchell could not do much either and the Kiwis found themselves reeling at 29-5. Glenn Phillips and Tom Blundell batted with intent after Tea but Blundell's departure left Phillips searching for partners. He found an able alley in Matt Henry and they did well to keep the runs flowing. However, Phillips fell on 71 after which Henry fought a lone fight before being dismissed on 42. Nathan Lyon was introduced late into the attack but it did not take him much long to get into the act and ended with four wickets to his name. With just over half an hour to go in the day's play, New Zealand need to make the new ball count. Can they succeed in doing so? We shall find out in a bit.
OUT! CAUGHT! A good inning by Matt Henry comes to an end as New Zealand are bowled out for 179 runs. Lyon sees the batter move away and follows him with a fuller delivery, Matt Henry goes for a big hoick but gets it off the inner half of the bat towards deep mid-wicket. Marnus Labuschagne gets under the ball and takes a good low catch to finish things off.
Bangs it on a length and follows Matt Henry who looks to make room. Henry gets squared up but manages to tuck it to fine leg for a single to retain strike.
FOUR! Went into surviving that bouncer and ended up getting a boundary. Josh Hazlewood bowls a sharp bouncer on middle and leg, Matt Henry looks to sway away late but gets brushed on his gloves as his bottom hand comes off the bat. The ball climbs further over the keeper and races to the fence.
SIX! That's even better! Hazlewood serves a slower ball just shorter in length over middle, Matt Henry clears his front leg and frees his arms to clobber it over long on for a maximum.
FOUR! Gets it right this time! Bowls a touch fuller into the stumps, Matt Henry keeps himself on the leg side of the line of the ball and whacks it over mid-wicket for a boundary.
Bowls it on a length over off, Matt Henry makes room and lobs it straight over the bowler and short of mid off.
Bangs it on a good length just outside off, Matt Henry looks for the big slash but gets beaten on all ends.
A bit too full from Lyon, around off, William O'Rourke pushes it to cover.
LEG BYES! Bowls it nice and full on middle, the ball grips and turns back in as William O'Rourke gets across the line. The ball brushes the right thigh and trickles down to fine leg for a couple of runs.
William O'Rourke is the last man in.
OUT! CAUGHT! A top catch that by Travis Head at short leg to dismiss the Kiwi skipper. Lyon comes from around the wicket and bowls it up on a short length around leg and gets the ball to turn in a bit, Tim Southee rocks back to clip it square on leg but gets an inside edge onto his thigh pad and it lobs to the right of short leg fielder. Travis Head is alert and he sticks out his right hand to grab a one-handed catch. New Zealand are still 21 runs away from avoiding a follow-on.
Floats this one up on middle and leg, Tim Southee manages to keep it out on the on side.
Quicker and fuller on off, Tim Southee clips it back to the bowler.
That leave could've cost him his wicket! Lyon tosses one up outside off on a fuller length, Tim Southee holds his bat back and leaves. The ball turns back in sharply going past the off stump.
Digs a sharp bouncer on middle and off, Matt Henry sways away.
Back of a length over off, Matt Henry miscues his pull to Marnus Labuschagne at covers.
Bowls it on a good length around off, Tim Southee taps it to the fielder at point and sets for the run. Marnus Labuschagne collects the ball and hits the stumps at the bowler's end. The umpire sends it upstairs but Tim Southee was well in the crease dragging his bat in.
