Right then, Australia have posted a below-par score but they have that bowling firepower to defend this while the hosts will be confident that their batters can back the good job done by their bowlers and start their World Cup campaign on a positive note. Join us in a bit to see how the chase unfolds.
Ravindra Jadeja, the pick of the bowlers for India is up for a quick chat. He says that he plays for Chennai and knows the conditions. Mentions that he was hoping to get two or three wickets before the start of the game and is happy to get those. Shares that the odd ball was turning and he was looking to bowl at the stumps. Adds that he was mixing the pace as well. States that the Chennai crowd always comes in good numbers. Ends by saying that they need to keep it simple in the chase and not do anything fancy.
India, on the other hand, will be extremely pleased with their bowling effort. Their catching and fielding were top-notch as well which is an area where they have struggled a bit in recent times, but not in this opening game. It was 'Boom Boom' Bumrah who set the tone for them by getting rid of Mitchell Marsh early on. After they couldn't pick any wickets for a long time but kept the runs in check too. The spin trio of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav were absolutely fantastic and used the conditions well. Kuldeep got the wicket of Warner while Jadeja removed Smith with a gem and then they controlled the game and didn't give an inch to the Aussie batters. Jadeja ended up with three wickets while Kuldeep got a couple of scalps and Ashwin picked up one too. Hardik Pandya was a bit expensive but he too got a wicket in the penultimate over while Mohammed Siraj finished the job which meant that all the bowlers got into the wicket-taking act for India.
Australia suffered an early blow when Mitchell Marsh went back without opening his account. However, after that David Warner and Steven Smith took a careful approach and stitched up a good partnership of 69 runs where the former became the fastest player to reach 1000 runs in the ODI World Cup, but right after the drinks break Warner got dismissed for 41 and they had to go into the rebuilding phase again. Smith along with Marnus Labuschagne steadied the ship for a bit, but the former perished for 46 to a peach of a delivery from Ravindra Jadeja. After that, no other batter could really make much impact and they suffered a collapse as they went from 110 for 3 to 140 for 7. However, some good contributions from the skipper, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc took them close to that 200-run mark.
A dominating bowling display from the Men in Blue! The boys have shown that they are up for the challenge in this World Cup and managed to restrict Australia to 199. The Aussies would have hoped for a better performance but the good thing for them is that this has come in the opening match and not at the business end of the tournament.
