India's home assignments against Afghanistan include a one-off Test in Mullanpur starting June 6, followed by three ODIs scheduled from June 14 across Dharamsala, Lucknow, and Chennai.

Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been expectedly rested from both the Test and ODI assignments as part of his workload management but he will be back for the tour of England later this summer. 

"Bumrah will be back when we tour England. He is working on his workload," Agarkar told reporters after the selection meeting.

"Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has done well, but let's not forget Yashasvi Jaiswal. As impressive as he is, Jaiswal has done as well. Vaibhav has done well to get to the A team, hope he does well there," Agarkar said.

"We have been told that at this point, T20 cricket is what he is ready, so there was no discussion regarding Mohammed Shami. There was chat around Auqib Nabi. Rishabh remains a part of Test squad and an incredible player. He's not part of ODI squad but right now he's a key part of Test team," said Agarkar during the press conference.

Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar: "Ravindra Jadeja is an integral part of the team. He's rested for the Test match and we are trying to give opportunities to other players. It's for this Test that we have not picked him."

The BCCI selection meeting is underway in Guwahati in the presence of chief selector Ajit Agarkar. The squad announcement press conference is expected to start any minute.

The future of veterans Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja could be the main focus of the selection meeting, which is currently underway in Guwahati. While there are no second thoughts over Kohli's position due to his strong recent outings, Rohit remains on the stickiest wicket due to his fitness concerns. Meanwhile, Jadeja also has the backing of the management, but will have to up his game in order to make the World Cup squad next year.

A big news coming-in from Guwahati. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia will be addressing the media at 4 PM to announce India squad for the Test and three ODIs against Afghanistan. 

Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy have given their stocks a lot of boost with their performances in the IPL. While Sundar has proven his credentials with the bat, Reddy has proven to be an asset with the bal. The duo's names are bound to be discussed in the meeting today.

Over the last year or so, the Indian team has seen other spin-bowling all-rounders emerge, like Washington Sundar and Axar Patel. For the Afghanistan Test, hence, the BCCI is spoilt for choices. As far as Jadeja's recent form is concerned, the Rajasthan Royals star has taken eight wickets in nine innings with the ball. With the bat, he has scored 190 runs in eight innings, with a highest score of 45 and an average of 47.50.

Mohammed Shami, who last played for India in March last year, continues to knock on the selectors doors. With Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj expected to be rested for the Afghanistan Test, could the selectors give a recall to Shami? 

As per a report by India Today, BCCI is yet to take a call on Hardik Pandya's inclusion in the ODI squad against Afghanistan. He is yet to return on field for Mumbai Indians as he is recovering for his lower back stiffness. The selectors want him to be 100 per cent fit for the ODIs. 

Rajasthan Royals' teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been backed by many retired cricketers for senior Team India call-up. However, the BCCI selection committee doesn't seem to be in a rush to hand him his debut yet. While Sooryavanshi has been picked for the Indi A assignments, would he be a part of the conversation during the selection meeting?

There's always immense competition in the Indian team, no matter the format. With some top players expected to be rested, the name of Devdutt Padikkal has surfaced for the No. 3 role in the Indian team. 

"I think Devdutt Padikkal has done enough to seal the no 3 spot in the test XI for India. He had a good Ranji Trophy with Karnataka. I know IPL performances mean nothing for test selection, but DDP has shown form even in the IPL. There is no reason why he should not be given a long run in the test team," former India batter Dodda Ganesh posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Rohit Sharma had missed a chunk of Mumbai Indians' matches earlier in the IPL due to a hamstring injury and in the last game against Punjab Kings, he only came out to bat as an impact player. The selectors will include him in the side only if he is fully fit for 100 overs of an ODI game.

Another pacer whose selection will be a topic of discussion at the BCCI selectors' meet is Mohammed Siraj. In the ongoing IPL, Siraj has impressed everyone with his brilliant bowling. He has taken 14 wickets in 13 games. Keeping Jasprit Bumrah's workload in mind, it will be really interesting to see if selectors go with Siraj as their premium pacer. 

Pacer Mohammed Shami has been sidelined by the selectors for quite some time. The veteran fast bowler, who played a pivotal role in India's success during the 2023 ODI World Cup and the title-winning campaign at the 2025 Champions Trophy, is yet to make a return to the national side since then. However, his impressive performances in the ongoing IPL season have significantly boosted his chances of an India comeback.

It has been reliably learned from NDTV sources that the BCCI selection meeting is about to start in Guwahati. The discussion over which players to rest and which to pick is on top of the agenda.

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee faces a tough choice between the two premier left-arm orthodox options - Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel - in the ODI format. They must decide whether to go with Jadeja's immense experience or Axar's highly impactful recent performances. The decision might give a hint towards which player the BCCI prefers in the long run.

Sources have reliably told NDTV that Rishabh Pant could lose his role as the team's vice-captain in the Test format. Pant hasn't been in the best of form in any format of late. The Afghanistan series could see the BCCI look at other options as Shubman Gill's deputy, allowing him to focus only on batting and wicket-keeping.

In order to better manage the workload concerns around Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, the BCCI could pick Prince Yadav and Mohsin Khan. The LSG duo has emerged as strong contenders after impressive IPL campaigns. Delhi Capitals' Auqib Nabi cold also be picked for the Test series. 

The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee has some big headaches to resolve, with the likes of Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya reportedly dealing with fitness concerns. While Hardik missed the last few games for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, Rohit only made his return a couple of games ago. The selection committee might want to tread carefully with the duo.
