When Chris Gayle gets going the opposition trembles. But it turns out the explosive talent of the West Indian batsman is dangerous not just for the opposition. One young girl, sitting in the stands of Chinnaswamy Stadium during Tuesday's match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Pune Warriors, was at the receiving end of one of flurry of Gayle sixes.
Gayle's batting turned the match around for RCB and led them to victory. But after receiving the Man of the Match award, Gayle made it a point to take a trip to the hospital where eleven-year old Tia Bhatia was taken for treatment.
And no doubt, the concern expressed by the cricketer himself did cheer up the young girl - who told him to keep hitting those sixes!
"Just visited little Tia. She got hit by a cricket ball. Very sad this happened. But she is a brave young lady and her first words were - I shouldn't be sad. And it was a very touching moment for me....I wish her a speedy recovery. I am sorry to the family as well. It is just unfortunate. She was very fun even though she was hurt. She told me to keep hitting sixes and not to worry - and wished me the best for all the games," Gayle said.
Nisha, an eyewitness to the incident, said: "We were all enjoying the match - you know Chris Gayle and his sixes. It was a total accident. The ball came and hit the girl and she shouted very loudly, blood came out. One of my friends lifted her and immediately everything was done."
The young girl is making a good recovery from Gayle's batting.
"She was hit by a sixer and came with bleeding of her nose and we found on investigation we found her nasal bone had been fractured. She has come out of the surgery beautifully. She is absolutely alright," confirmed Dr Kanchan Sanyal, Medical Superintendent, Mallya Hospital.
It was one cricket match little Tia will not forget in a hurry. The good news is that the young girl is well on the way to recovery. And RCB fans will continue to hope that Gayle continues to be at his explosive best, but with no more collateral damage.
