Stuart Broad's 6 for 81 helped England bowl Australia out for 295 early on the second day of the first Ashes Test in Brisbane. This was the eleventh time that Broad has taken five wickets or more in an innings and the fifth time against Australia. However, England's batsman could not make the most of this opportunity and were bowled out for 136. Australia ended the day at 65/0 with a lead of 224.
Broad recorded his second best figures away from home. His previous best was 6 for 51 against New Zealand at Wellington in 2013. This is the second best by an England bowler against Australia at the Gabba, next only to the 6 for 41 by Bill Voce in December 1936.
The 51 wickets that Broad has from 11 Tests in 2013 is his personal best in a calendar year. Incidentally he is the only bowler with fifty wickets this year. Broad's victims included the likes of David Warner, Shane Watson and Michael Clarke, showing just how difficult it was for the Aussies to handle him. Coming into the series having been branded a cheat by the Australian media, Broad answered his critics the only way he knows how, with the ball.
