Turning pro in boxing is about glitz, glamour and a lot of money. Behind all of it though, there's a lot of sweat and tears. Star Indian boxer Vijender Singh though is not intimidated by the hard-work and says established champions like Manny Pacquiao and Flloyd Mayweather serve as great inspiration. Speaking to sports.ndtv.com on Sunday, the boxer who recently turned pro admitted that the road in front is different and tough. Watching heroes in the sport train and fight therefore becomes crucial. "They (Pacquiao and Mayweather) are legends. They have worked extremely hard and deserve the respect they get worldwide," said Vijender. "I have been following their fights and training, and it has begun helping me a lot." The Olympic medalist has tons of experience fighting at the amateur level. The pro level though raises the bar immensely and Vijender is aware of it. "I am concentrating on my basics at the moment. Of course I am using the experience of amateur boxing but there's a lot more that's needed," said the 29-year-old. "I may have turned pro a bit late but dedication can more than make up for it." With success though comes a need to be rooted - a fact Vijender is only too aware of. "While you don't choose between legends, if I have to, I will say I admire Pacquiao the most in pro boxing," he said. "He is not only a hard-worker but has also remained humble throughout. That is exactly what is needed from successful people." (Respect Vijender's Decision to Turn Pro: Mary Kom)
Little wonder then that the seasoned boxer will come out cheering for the Indian contingent during the Rio Olympics - even if he himself won't be participating in it. "See, I would like to share all my knowledge with the Indian boxers who qualify for Rio. I am always there for them and will also be going to Rio to support them," said Vijender.
