Chetan, mixed doubles team in German Open quarters

Chetan Anand scripted a thrilling win over Denmark's Hans-Kristian Vittinghus to emerge as the lone Indian survivor even as compatriots Anup Sridhar and Arvind Bhatt bowed out in the third round of the Yonex German Open.

The second-seeded Chetan defeated Vittinghus 21-14, 18-21, 21-12 in a 45-minute contest late last night to set up a quarter-final clash with Weijie Gong of China later on Friday.

Playing in the third round, national champion Arvind was the first to bow out after he lost 21-16, 11-21, 19-21 to fifth-seed Andrew Smith of England in a 50-minute gruelling encounter, according to information received here.

Sridhar also put up a fight but could not get past Choong Hann Wong. The third-seed Malaysian beat Sridhar 21-16, 21-18 in just over half an hour.

Meanwhile, the Indian pair of V Diju and Jwala Gutta made short work of American duo Halim Haryanto Ho and Yun Peng 21-10, 21-12 to reach the mixed doubles quarter-finals.

The fourth-seeded Indians will meet Bo Zheng and Jin Ma of China for a place in the last four.
