The Ashes, England vs Australia stats: Peter Siddle stages encore of five-wicket hauls
Batsmen from both teams found going tough as the first day of the opening Ashes Test between England and Australia was dominated by the bowlers completely.

Australia and England bowlers had a successful first day of the Ashes 2013 opener. Here is why:
# Peter Siddle (5/50) has produced his eighth five-wicket haul in Tests - his fourth against England. (Read Day 1 report)
# Siddle has bagged five wickets in an innings twice in Tests in England - his first instance being five for 21 at Leeds in August 2009.
# Siddle has completed 25 wickets (ave.26.64) in six Tests vs England in England. Amongst the bowlers capturing at least 25 wickets vs England in England, Siddle's strike rate of 42.1 is the second best - the best being 39.8 by Glenn McGrath while claiming 87 wickets (ave.19.34) in 14 Tests. # Jonathan Trott (48) has posted his highest score in seven innings at Trent Bridge, eclipsing the 38 vs Pakistan in 2010.
# Trott's batting average fell below 50 - his present tally being 3499 runs at an average of 49.98, including nine hundreds, in 44 Tests. (Pics)
# In four Tests in succession - three vs New Zealand and Trent Bridge Test vs Australia - the top four England batsmen could not register fifties in the first innings.

# Ian Bell has registered his worst batting performance in a calendar year - his aggregate being 251 in ten innings at an average of 27.88 - his only fifty being 75 vs New Zealand at Auckland in March.

# Shane Watson is averaging 16.00 in Tests in 2013 - his tally being 112 in seven innings without a fifty.

# Michael Clarke's second duck vs England is his eighth in Tests. In his last four innings, he has registered two ducks - his sequence of scores being 16, 0 & 18 vs India and 0 vs England.
# Both number three and fourth batsmen recording ducks in the same innings has happened for the 13th time for Australia in Tests - the last instance being Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey vs South Africa at Perth in December 2008.
# Three bowlers - Ishant Sharma, James Anderson and Dale Steyn - have dismissed Michael Clarke seven times each - the most, followed by six times each by Steve Harmison and Anil Kumble.
