Ashton Agar is the new kid on the block for Australian cricket. At a time when the Aussies are trying to rebuild their team and hunting for quality spinners, Agar may answer their prayers.
The 19-year old left-arm orthodox Agar has been up and around in a short span of time. The icing on the cake for the rookie came when he was included in the Playing XI for the first Test against England at Trent Bridge in the 2013 Ashes series. Agar has played for Western Australia, the Perth Scorchers, and toured India with Michael Clarke's squad earlier this year. In 10 first class games, Agar has 31 wickets, with a best of 5 for 65. He has scored 336 runs, with a best of 71 not out.
Agar's first class debut came against New South Wales in January this year. He scored just 10 in the first innings but took three wickets before scoring an unbeaten 34 in the second innings.
It is interesting to note that he has a Sri Lankan background. Agar is the grandson of Nala Hewawissa, who played cricket for Dharmarajah College, Kandy. Sheilagh Hewawissa, Agar's grandmother, worked for the Ceylon Tea Board. Agar's father, John, has played club cricket in Melbourne.
