Kolkata:

Sania Mirza cruised into the semifinals of the Sunfeast Open in Kolkata beating France's Aravane Rezai on Friday. Rezai, ranked four places above Sania at 66, failed to make her ranking count as she lost to the Hyderabadi teenager 6-4, 7-5. Sania may play top seed Martina Hingis in the semifinal. Sania got off to a good start against her 4th-seeded French opponent as she got an early break to race away to a 3-1 lead in the first set. But Rezai broke back soon after, matching her 19-year-old opponent stroke for stroke from the baseline as Sania looked on in dismay and disbelief. At four all, Sania held on to take the set 6-4. In the second set, the match turned into a baseline slugfest, with both players unwilling to come up to the net. The two were again tied at four all, but Sania proved too good in the end as she sealed the set 7-5, and with it the match.
