The tennis circuit is making its customary stop in Europe for the clay court season, which leads up to the French Open next month. The Monte Carlo Masters is underway and the first day saw a couple of seeds making an exit - big serving Andy Roddick, the third seed, and Alex Corretja the 12th seed. Roddick found himself set point down after Spain's Albert Portas came up with a great backhand down the line. Portas went on to clinch the opening set 7-6. Portas, ranked 96th in the world, produced the biggest upset of the day - Roddick was dumped out in the first round. Top seed Juan Carlos Ferrero had little trouble taking the opening set 6-4 with a great backhand cross court against Aussie Wayne Arthurs. The defending champion was looking in ominous form as he produced some delightful strokes. Arthurs had no answer to Ferrero's game and lost in straight sets after the Spaniard came up with a forehand cross court winner to take the match 6-4, 6-1. Former champion Gustavo Kuerten had to fight hard before he finally overcame American Mardy Fish in three sets.
