Pierce hopes to improve ranking at Indian Open

Hyderabad:

Former French Open champion Mary Pierce is in India this week to participate in the WTA Indian Open being held in Hyderabad. On her first visit to India for the WTA Indian Open, Pierce admits this year is a critical year. From being world number three in 2000, her ranking fell the following year when a back injury kept her away from the game for nearly seven months. "That is the period that affected my ranking the most because when I came back last year, I started the season ranked at 293. I finished last year at around 50. So I moved about 240 spots in a year, which is not too bad. I am healthy and am feeling good and am working my way back up to the top," said Pierce. The two-time Grand Slam champion says the calendar is too crowded and players end up playing more tournaments because that is the only way to maintain ranking. "We play 11 months a year and that is a lot. I would like to see a season of about eight months. That way you have time to be home, be with your friends and family, and also be able to take a break mentally and physically and also time to prepare yourself," said Pierce. The Canada-born star is the main attraction at the tournament, where she also plays doubles with local girl Sania Mirza.
