New York:
Number three seed Serena Williams brushed aside the Czech Republic's Sandra Kleinova 6-1, 6-3 on her way to the second round of US Open women's singles.
The 22-year-old American beat her opponent in less than an hour, hitting 35 winners in the process.
Serena will next take on fellow countrywoman Lindsay Lee-Water, who has yet to reach the third round of a grand slam event in thirteen previous attempts.
Capriati, Dementieva struggle
Local favourite Jennifer Capriati got off to a sluggish start in her opening round match against Denisa Chaldkova, dropping the first set 6-2 to her fired up Czech opponent.
But the three time semi-finalist at Flushing Meadows turned the match around, easily taking the next two sets 6-1 6-2 to clinch her spot in the second round.
Sixth seed Elena Dementieva was also given a bit of a shock, losing the first set against fellow Russian Dinara Safina 6-2.
But the 22-year-old French Open finalist rallied to take the next two sets, conceding just three more games in running out the winner 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 in an hour and 40 minutes. (AP)
Dementieva, who reached the fourth round here last year, will take on the unseeded Severine Beltrame of France in round two.
