Federer, Hantuchova emerge winners
Roger Federer won his first-round match at the US Open in New York after his opponent, Jose Acasuso, retired in the fourth set of their match.

Roger Federer won his first-round match at the US Open in New York after his opponent, Jose Acasuso, retired in the fourth set of their match.
Federer lost the first set, but then won the next two 6-3, 6-3 and was leading 2-0 in the fourth when Acasuso called it a day.
The day's other early matches featured Younes El Aynaoui and Mark Philippoussis.
The 22nd seed El Aynaoui had a straight sets win over American Alex Kim a€" 7-5, 7-6, 6-3.
Philippoussis too did not drop a set in his win over little-known Janko Tipsarevic a€" 6-2, 7-6, 6-4.
On the women's side, Daniela Hantuchova, Amelie Mauresmo and 2002 US Open girls' champ Maria Kirilenko advanced to the third round.
Hantuchova was a 6-0, 7-6 winner over Ukraine's Julia Vakulenko. Frenchwoman Mauresmo had an easier time over compatriot Stephanie Cohen Aloro, losing just four games in her 6-2, 6-2 win.
