Kolkata:

Indian challenge in the singles event of the WTA Sunfeast Open ended with Sunitha Rao crashing out in the second round while smooth-as-silk Daniela Hantuchova sailed into the quarter-final on Thursday.

The evening also saw Ukrainian girl Mariya Koryttseva bringing giant-killer Vania King's campaign to an end on the fourth day of the tournament at the Netaji Indoor stadium.

Florida-based Sunitha Rao proved no match for Briton Anne Keothavong and went down in straight sets 3-6 2-6.

King, who had stunned top seed Marion Bartoli of France in the opening round on Tuesday, seemed deep in the woods against her much lower ranked opponent and went down in
straight sets 1-6 2-6.

Second seed Slovak Hantuchova sent down lightning serves and an array of forehand shots to outclass Russian Anastasia Rodionova 6-2 6-1 under an hour.

Rodionova put in a lot of hard work but in the end it was not enough to match the world number 11 player.
