Gold Coast:
Tatiana Golovin of France has found a willing doubles partner in comeback player Martina Hingis for the Australian women's hardcourt tennis championships.
Golovin, 17, will partner Hingis in doubles and take on Australia's Nicole Pratt in singles on Monday.
Hingis will also play singles Monday, facing 63rd-ranked Maria Vento-Kabchi of Venezuela in her return to competitive tennis at Royal Pines.
The 25-year-old Hingis, winner of five Grand Slam singles titles, is one of the most successful doubles players as well, claiming nine Grand Slam titles, including four Australian Opens.
She is one of only four women to win all four doubles majors in one year.
In first-round singles play Sunday, players from the Czech Republic won three matches, including Lucie Safarova's upset victory over sixth-seeded Ai Sugiyama of Japan.
Safarova beat Sugiyama 6-1, 6-2, seventh-seeded Klara Koukalova defeated Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States 6-4, 6-4 and Iveta Benesova downed Australian wild card Sophie Ferguson 7-5, 6-2. (AP)
