Canas beats Mayer in the second round
Guillermo Canas, runner-up twice in the last three years, rallied to beat Wimbledon quarterfinalist Florian Mayer.

Stuttgart : Guillermo Canas, runner-up twice in the last three years, rallied to beat Wimbledon quarterfinalist Florian Mayer 6-7 (3/7), 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 in the second round of the Mercedes Cup ATP clay-court tournament. Also, fourth-seeded Andrei Pavel rolled past Bohdan Ulihrach 6-1, 6-1 to reach the third round. No. 11 David Ferrer and No. 15 Nikolay Davydenko also advanced, but No. 7 Feliciano Lopez crashed out, losing 6-3, 6-4 to Stefan Koubek, who had lost both of their previous matches. Sixth-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain a finalist last year also lost, falling to Richard Gasquet of France 6-1, 6-4. Mayer squandered a 5-1 lead to allow Canas to even the score at 5-5 in the opening set. Mayer then wasted three set points on his serve, with Canas saving the set with a lucky netcord shot. But Mayer cruised through the tiebreaker 7-3. The ninth-seeded Mayer quickly fell into a 3-0 hole in the second, before breaking back to tie the score. Canas took the tiebreaker to send the match into the decisive third set. Canas broke serve for a 5-4 lead and served out match, using his first match point. Ferrer needed three sets to beat Arnaud di Pasquale 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, while Davydenko breezed past wild card Andreas Beck 6-3, 6-3. Alexander Popp, runner-up at Newport in his first ATP final, dismissed German compatriot Alexander Waske 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 in a first-round match. (AP)
