Ancic wins inaugural 'Superset' event in UK

London: Superset tennis is a single set 'winner takes all' tournament with a prize purse of almost half a million US dollars up for grabs. And though not an official ATP tour event, superset tennis was staged in Britain for the first time turning traditional tennis on its head with DJs, stunning lighting, plasma screens and the latest technology to present a turbo-charged sporting experience like no other. Star-studded event A mix of eight current and former professionals were up against each other at London's Wembley Arena. And after winning his opening match against former world number one Boris Becker, home favourite Greg Rusedski in the near court was up against Spain's Tommy Robredo. Rusedski came through, breaking twice to serve out the match with an ace for a 6-2 victory. McEnroe in action The second semi final saw 45 year-old John McEnroe in the far court take on Croatia's Mario Ancic, 25 years his junior. But the age gap hardly showed. McEnroe gave glimpses of his imperious best, dragging Ancic around the court and picking up half-volleys that most other players past or present would find impossible to control. No tantrums though from this more mature and mellow McEnroe even after double-faulting on match point to hand the tie to Ancic by nine games to seven. And in the finals Rusedski and Ancic walked out for the decider like two prizefighters, and with the serve a powerful weapon for both players, they slugged it out for a total of twenty games. Ancic in the near court produced a number of telling passes on the Rusedski serve at 10 games to nine to set up match point and then put away this easy forehand down the line to take the match and win his first singles tournament as a professional. And while overcoming the likes of Robby Ginepri, John McEnroe and Rusedski might not look quite as impressive to some, but for just three sets of play, Ancic went home richer by US$ 450,000.
