Chris Gayle is a Twenty20 phenomenon. His big-hitting abilities have lit up Twenty20 tournaments all across the globe. In the final against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Gayle showed who was the boss when it came to big match situations.
Heading into the final, Gayle had scored only one fifty in the 2016 Indian Premier League, which is a far cry from the huge amount of big scores he has amassed in previous editions of the tournament. However, on the day of the final, he looked determined to post a huge score.
Gayle looked to be aggressive right from the start and he got going with a chipped straight drive off Barinder Sran for a six to long on. In the process, he notched up 9000 Twenty20 runs, the first batsman in history to notch up the landmark.
The Jamaican superstar continued on his merry ways and he targeted Sran for punishment, smashing two further sixes and a four in the fourth over to put Royal Challengers Bangalore on course. He brought up his 20th fifty and his second of the tournament in grand style by launching Moises Henriques down the ground for a big six.
He continued to smash sixes as he clobbered two sixes and a four to bring up the 100 in just the ninth over for RCB. Gayle looked good for a century but he mistimed and off-cutter from Cutting to depart for 76 off 38 balls.
Gayle and Kohli have put RCB on course for their maiden IPL title and on the big day, he has come good.
