Virat Kohli is India's Test captain
India's Test captain Virat Kohli has been nominated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award. The BCCI has also recommended Ajinkya Rahane for the Arjuna Award.
Kohli is currently leading Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League. After a prolific international season, where he finished as the Man of the Series in the ICC World Twenty20, Kohli is the 'Orange Cap' holder for scoring maximum runs (433) in IPL 2016 so far.
Rahane has been one of India's batting pillars. He is currently playing for IPL debutants Rising Pune Supergiants and with 280 runs is sixth on IPL 2016 top scorers' list.
If Kohli wins the Khel Ratna, India's highest sporting honour, then he will be the third cricketer after Sachin Tendulkar (1997-98) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (2007) to get it.
According to reports, Kohli will be up against Incheon Asian Games gold medallist shooter Jitu Rai, golfer Anirban Lahiri, athlete Tintu Luka and squash player Deepika Pallikal.
BCCI's recommendation for Khel Ratna has come after four years. In 2012, the Board had suggested Rahul Dravid's name but Olympic medallists wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt and shooter Vijay Kumar won the coveted award. Dravid was given the Padma Bhusan in 2013.
