Pushed by Faf du Plessis' half-century, Rising Pune Supergiants reached a fighting total but not before Mohit Sharma bowled a brilliant last over, restricting the visitors to only 152/7. In reply, half-centuries from Murali Vijay and Manan Vohra and a superb cameo at the end from Glenn Maxwell handed Kings XI Punjab their first win in the ninth edition of the Indian Premier League by six wickets. Kings XI Punjab got off to a superb start after Man of the Match Manan Vohra and Murali Vijay struck a 97-run opening wicket partnership while chasing 153. But a fightback from Rising Pune Supergiants saw them in more than a spot of bother. Glenn Maxwell rose to the occasion and played a brilliant cameo to help Kings XI to reach the their target with eight balls to spare. Dhoni's needs to get his team combination right as against Gujarat Lions, except for Ravichandran Ashwin, all the bowlers had an economy rate of more than 7.50 per over. The likes of RP Singh are past their prime and Dhoni needs to sort out the issue. Pune also have Ishant Sharma in the pace bowling department but even he conceded 39 in his four overs. Ultimately, Pune lost by seven wickets.
In the batting department, openers Ajinkya Rahane and Faf du Plessis have given Pune hope. But the middle-order consisting Kevin Pietersen, Steven Smith, Mitchell Marsh and Dhoni need to contribute in a bigger way.
Kings XI Punjab, on the other hand, are yet to score their first points in 2016 IPL. They lost to Delhi Daredevils in their previous match by seven wickets.
