CSK vs RR: Tough contest on the cards
Back in familiar territory after recording their biggest-ever win in terms of runs, Chennai Super Kings will fancy their chances when they lock horns with Rajasthan Royals, a team seeking to get back to winning ways, in the Indian Premier League here on Wednesday.
Two-time winners Chennai will be high on confidence after inflicting on Delhi Daredevils an embarrassing 93-defeat on Monday. The Super Kings needed a morale-booster like that after starting the campaign with a defeat.
On the other hand, inaugural edition champions Rajasthan Royals tasted success to start with, but failed to stop Kings XI Punjab from chasing down a 190-plus total in their last match.
Both teams have notched up a win each, to go with a defeat each from two outings.
'Complete win' delights MS Dhoni
Chennai Super Kings crushed Delhi Daredevils by 93 runs to record their first win in this year's Indian Premier League and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni termed his side's outing today as a "complete performance".
Chennai first rode on Suresh Raina's fine half-century and a late burst from the skipper to post a competitive 177 and then came up with disciplined bowling and fielding efforts to bundle the Daredevils out for a paltry 84 in 15.4 overs.
"It was a complete performance. Catches win matches and it was proved today. This was a perfect game for us," Dhoni said at the post-match presentation ceremony at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium here.
"There was a bit of help for the fast bowlers. Seven batsmen should be good enough in a T20 match. We had a day off (against Kings XI Punjab in their opening game) and fielding is something we always emphasise on and it can be a benchmark for forthcoming games," he added after his fielders took outstanding catches to support a terrific bowling effort. Ishwar Pandey credits fielders
He played an important role in Chennai Super Kings' crushing win over Delhi Daredevils in an Indian Premier League match, but pacer Ishwar Pandey says he did not do anything special and it was the fielders who made his effort look better.
Pandey delivered figures of 4-0-23-2 in his first match for CSK, which the team won by 93 runs, but chose to play it down. "We are a great fielding side who had a bad outing in the last match. We were motivated to correct that and it showed in the catches our fielders pulled off today," Pandey told IPL's official website. (Read more)
Chennai Super Kings's unique achievement
Chennai Super Kings, the two-time Indian Premier League champions, pocketed their first points in the seventh edition of the tournament in Abu Dhabi on Monday night. Having lost their first game against Kings XI Punjab, CSK made a stunning comeback whipping the Daredevils by 93 runs in a one-sided contest.
Suresh Raina hit a Man-of-the-Match winning 56 as CSK scored 177 for 7 after making a cautious start. Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravidra Jadeja and Ishwar Pandey took two wickets each as Delhi folded for a paltry 84, the lowest in IPL 2014 so far, to hand Chennai their biggest win in terms of runs.
Chennai's 93-run triumph was their biggest in terms of runs at the IPL, bettering the 92-run victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore at Port Elizabeth on April 20, 2009. Their previous biggest win over Delhi was by 86 runs (twice) - at Chennai on May 25, 2012 and at Delhi on April 18, 2013. (Read more)
