IPL: Deccan charged but what lies ahead?

New Delhi:

Deccan Chargers may not be a part of the IPL now but their ouster has opened doors for others to step in and be a part of the most influential and most followed cricket league in the world.

Meanwhile, there's development on the IPL front as the National Capital Region could have it's 2nd Team if rumours are too be believed - owned by Jaypee Group. The people behind India's first Formula 1 Grand Prix are said to be the front runners for a new IPL franchise now that the 2009 Champions Deccan Chargers have been terminated. This would also mean that the Delhi Daredevils, who are owned by GMR will have some serious competition as far as garnering fans is concerned. It would also mean the first real 'cricket derby' in the cash rich IPL.

It is football, though, where the Derby trend began - whether it is the rivalry in the English clubs or the Spanish ones, whether it is the Mohun Bagan-East Bengal rivalry in India - and it has captured widespread imagination ever since.

A "cricket derby" is right on its way if all things fall in place and the Jaypee group manages to land an IPL team for the next season.

Now that the IPL administrators are free to float tenders for a new team, quite a few cities have shown interest in bagging the vacant spot(s).

The 10 shortlisted 'candidates' are Ahmedabad, Greater Noida, Visakhapatnam, Cuttack, Indore, Rajkot, Nagpur, Dharamsala, Jamshedpur and Ranchi.

Sources say that Ahmedabad is the front-runner in the bid to be the 10th team cometh the IPL VI in 2013.

It was earlier also believed that two more teams would be included for the sixth premier league edition but 'strategic planning' has nullified that proposition.
