Entering into the match, the 27-year-old was under some pressure having contributed just 112 runs at an average of 22.4. He shared a century stand with Ajinkya Rahane, which was the first century stand in this series.
Kohli broke a lean patch with a masterful half-century, which included ten hits to the fence. However, the local boy did have his share of luck as well. But in the 34th over of India's second innings, Kohli was adjudged caught behind by Dane Vilas off the bowling of Imran Tahir.
Australian umpire Bruce Oxenford reckoned that Kohli had got a faint edge to the keeper. The Indian skipper was stunned at the decision and he refused to move after he was given out.
Finally, as he started making his way, the umpire wanted to check for the no-ball. Replays suggested that Tahir had overstepped and the decision was overturned. Kohli, then later on, returned to the crease and had a quiet chat with the umpire.
When he notched up his fifty, the celebrations were muted. The partnership with Rahane was crucial considering the fact that India were reeling at 57/4 at one stage and the stand could well help the hosts in their push towards a 3-0 win against the Proteas.ÂÂ
