India needed eight wickets for win on the third day, and they achieved the task in style. Barring Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis none of the South African batsmen could pose any challenge for the Indian spinners. This is India's first home Test series win under captain Virat Kohli. This is also South Africa's first away Test series loss in nine years.
The star of the show was Ashwin, who scripted his 15th five-wicket haul to help India win the match and the series. "A batsman goes out there for a hundred and I go there to get five-wicket a haul. Today Amit (Mishra) bowled really well. He brought us back into the match by dismissing Hashim Amla and Faf du Plessis, who were doing really well," said Ashwin, who was also declared the man-of-the match.ÂÂ
Virat Kohli, who achieved his first home series win as Test captain, credited Ashwin for the win. "It is very pleasing to beat a tough team like South Africa. We have been positive throughout the entire series. Ashwin is a world class spinner, probably the best in the world. He is the reason why we have been winning consistently," he said.
"Amit Mishra showed great character to dismiss Amla and du plessis, that was the turning point. It was a tough wicket but its all about the application. Our batsmen showed character throughout the series."

11:13 hrs IST: Faf du Plessis brings up South Africa's 100 with a six off Jadeja. Both batsmen have now settled in and the stand is keeping South Africa afloat. However, there is still a long way to go.

10:08 hrs IST: Ashwin has deceived a terrific batsman with a terrific delivery. One feels that this is it for South Africa. AB de Villiers lbw Ashwin 9 (21).
The carrom ball from Ashwin, it just spins away and de Villiers plays down the wrong line, the ball hits the back pad and that would have hit middle and off stump. South Africa in deep trouble.
10:00 hrs IST: So far, de Villiers has been using his feet regularly to tackle the spinners but he is also being troubled by some awkward bounce. Amla, on the other hand, is just hanging in there against Jadeja. 09:55 hrs IST: AB de Villiers survives a close stumping and a missed sweep but he manages to get off the pair.

09:15 hrs IST: A warm welcome to day three of the third Test between India and South Africa from Nagpur. India are coming close to achieving a magnificent Test series win over South Africa. South Africa will have to produce something extra-ordinary to stop India winning the Nagpur Test. Sunil Gavaskar feels the South Africans, just like the Mohali Test, are losing the game in their minds and have shown little urge to play Indian spin the way it should be.
Wickets were on a freefall on Day 2 of the third Test of the Freedom Series on Thursday. A record-equalling 20 crashed on Thursday and three spinners - Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Imran Tahir - profited due to poor skills from batsmen on either side. Gavaskar slammed critics for calling the Jamtha wicket, "under-prepared".
Shot out for 79 in their first innings, South Africa managed the lowest test total by a visiting side in India, beating the previous mark of 82 posted by Sri Lanka in 1990 at Chandigarh. The touring batsmen appeared clueless against the accuracy of Ashwin and Jadeja on a pitch offering variable pace and bounce for the bowlers.
Now to win the match, South Africa will have to make the highest ever score by a visiting side in the fourth innings of a Test match in India, the current best being the 276/5 of the West Indies in 1987 at Delhi, thanks to a brilliant century by Viv Richards, who made an unbeaten 109 off 102 balls on a turning track.
South Africa's best effort while chasing on Indian wickets has been 164 for six in Mumbai in 2000. Battling demons in their minds and needing another 278 runs for a win with eight wickets in hand, it will need a Herculean effort from Hashim Amla and Co.
