Yousuf needs time for comeback: Pak team manager

Karachi:

Despite rushing him to England, Pakistan did not include Mohammad Yousuf in the team for the second Test that started at Edgbaston on Friday, and manager Yawar Saeed said the former captain was dropped to give him more to prepare himself for his international comeback.

Apart from Yousuf, the tour selection committee that includes captain Salman Butt and coach Waqar Younis has also dropped wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal because of his poor form.

Yousuf reached Birmingham on Thursday but could not attend the net session due to jetlag and Yawar said the team management decided to rest the senior batsman to give him adequate time to prepare himself mentally and physically for the third match of the series.

"Yousuf is not playing this Test while we have decided to give Kamran (Akmal) a rest so that he can regain his confidence and form," team manager Yawar said from Birmingham.

"He (Yousuf) has not played any cricket since February and obviously, he himself understand he needs time to make a comeback to Test cricket," he said.

"The good thing is that there is a gap before the Third test. We also have a tour match which will allow Yousuf to get some competitive cricket and in the meantime also have regular nets," he added.

Interestingly, Yousuf, a veteran of 88 Tests and 282 ODIs, was rushed to England at a short notice after England humiliated Pakistan by 354 runs in the first Test at Nottingham last week.

Yawar, meanwhile, said it was great opportunity for young Zulqarnain Haider to impress as he makes his Test debut in absence of Kamran.

Kamran has been dropped after a poor display in the first Test, where he not only failed to score runs but also dropped catches and missed stumpings.
