The Ashes: England vs Australia 2nd Test - Day 2 as it happened

England have the 1-0 advantage but the Australians refuse to be mere pushovers and continue to detest the earlier tag of being the Ashes underdogs. Live updates from the second day's play of the second Test as follows.

22:39 (IST) - WICKET! Peter Siddle in on fire at Lord's. Kevin Pietersen slashes a widish delivery to Chris Rogers at point. Kevin Pietersen (5) b Peter Siddle. England 361 and 30/3 after 14.5 overs vs Australia 128.

22:27 (IST) - WICKET! Peter Siddle gets Jonathan Trott, who plays onto stumps. Siddle has not conceded any run so far in this innings. Trott (0) b Siddle. England 361 and 22/2 after 12.2 overs vs Australia 128.

21:46 (IST) - Lucky Joe Root survives. He edged Shane Watson but that goes between wicketkeeper Brad Haddin and Michael Clarke at first slip. Catches win matches! England 361 and 18/0 after 4 overs vs Australia 128.

21:36 (IST) - England come out to bat again with a healthy lead of 233 runs. Ryan Harris bowls the first over. Joe Root and Alastair Cook are the two England openers.

21:25 (IST) - WICKET! Graeme Swann picks up his 16th five-wicket haul in Tests. Ryan Harris looks to go over long on but fails to clear Kevin Pietersen at mid on. Ryan Harris (10) c Kevin Pietersen b Graeme Swann. Australia all out for 128 in 53.3 overs in reply to England's 361. England will bat again.

21:14 (IST) - DROPPED! Graeme Swann drops Ryan Harris on 10 off his own bowling. Will this prove costly for England. Australia still nee 38 runs more to avoid follow on.

20:47 (IST) - WICKET! Brad Haddin is gone and Australia are nine down! Graeme Swann at it again. He gives this one a lot of air outside off, Haddin is tempted to play the big booming sweep shot and gets a top edge, Jonathan Trott takes a two-handed catch above his head at first slip. Haddin fell for 7 and Swann is one wicket away from another five-wicket haul.

20:43 (IST) - WICKET! It's Peter Siddle who bites the dust and James Anderson strikes, believe it or not, for the first time in the innings. A shortish ball moving away from the right-hander and Siddle pokes at it, only to give an agile Graeme Swann an easy take at second slip. Siddle made 2.

20:38 (IST) - The hundred is up for Australia, thanks to an attacking sweep by Brad Haddin off Graeme Swann. Had he shown this intent earlier, Australia wouldn't have taken 43.4 overs to reach three figures. However, the pressure of wickets tumbling from the other end restricts your scoring! 20:33 (IST) - With a slip, forward short leg and short mid on, Graeme Swann starts proceedings after tea. Peter Siddle survives first over of the final session on Day 2. Australia 97 for 7 after 42 overs.

20:15 (IST) - TEA! England dominated the second session, bagging 6 wickets. Australia are reeling at 96 for 7 in 41 overs, still trailing by 265 runs. Brad Haddin and Peter Siddle are at the crease. This session - 28.2 overs, 54 runs and 6 wickets.

20:04 (IST) - WICKET! Ashton Agar makes a long walk back to pavilion. Brad Haddin played it to square leg but was never ready to change ends with Agar. 19:27 (IST) - WICKET! Graeme Swann bags another. Steven Smith gloves it to forward short leg and Ian Bell takes a good catch diving to his left. Steven Smith (2) c Ian Bell b Graeme Swann.

19:12 (IST) - It's drink break at Lord's after lunch. England have dominated this session with wickets of Chris Rogers, Phillip Hughes and Usman Khawaja. Skipper Michael Clarke and Steven Smith are at the crease.

18:58 (IST) - WICKET! Another one bites the dust. Usman Khawaja was struggling against Graeme Swann. This time he gives the charge but skies to mid off, where Kevin Pietersen makes no mistake. He was earlier dropped on 7 but fails to make the most of it. Usman Khawaja (14) c Kevin Pietersen b Graeme Swann.

18:38 (IST) - WICKET! Tim Bresnan removes Phillip Hughes for 1. Hughes chases a widish delivery and ends up edging it to keeper Matt Prior. He opts for a review and that goes in England's favour. Phillip Hughes (1) c Matt Prior b Tim Bresnan

18:32 (IST) - Usman Khawaja dropped on 7 by Jonathan Trott at first slip off Graeme Swann. Australia 53 for 2 after 18 overs.

18:22 (IST) - WICKET! Chris Rogers departs. It was a full toss delivery by Graeme Swann and Rogers tried to play it over mid wicket. He missed the line and it hit him on the thigh guard. He never opted for a review and replays showed the ball was going down leg.

18:18 (IST) - Australia spinner Ashton Agar was sent for scans on his sore hip after the first day's play in the second Ashes Test between England and Australia at Lord's. (Read full report)

17:35 (IST) - WICKET! Shane Watson departs and Australia lose their first wicket and that will also be lunch time. Tim Bresnan traps him leg before. Watson was looking for a drive as  missed the line completely. Shane Watson 30 lbw b Tim Bresnan.

17:21 (IST) - Shane Watson is looking solid and has scored all his runs on off-side. He is on 29 with the help of 6 fours. Chris Rogers is playing on 6. Australia 35 for no loss after 10 overs.

17:02 (IST) - Six overs have been bowled and Australia are 9 for no loss with Shane Watson 8* (2x4s) and Chris Rogers 1*.

16:43 (IST) - Stuart Broad has joined James Anderson in the opening spell. Australia are yet to open their account.

15:30 (IST) - Ryan Harris starts the proceedings as he bowls the first ball of the day to Tim Bresnan. And that's out! Bresnan edges it to Haddin and Australia strike early. (England 289/8 in 89.1 overs)

 

15:20 (IST) - It's a bright and sunny day at Lord's, a good setting for a nice game of cricket.

 

15:00 (IST) - Half an hour to go, the countdown begins as it's almost time for the second day's play to start.

 

14:30 (IST) - An hour left for the first ball to be bowled on Day 2. All the focus is on Lord's as England and Australia gear up for another day of a hard fought contest.

 

14:00 (IST) - About 90 minutes to go for the start of play. The match is evenly poised with England at 289/7. It was honours shared on Day 1 but Day 2 shall go a long way to determine who dominates the game.

 

13:40 (IST) - Australia's last Test series win on English soil was in 2001 when they won 4-1.

 

13:25 (IST) - If England win this Test it will be their fourth consecutive win over Australia. They won the last 2 Tests of the 2010-11 Ashes series Down Under and the first one in this series.

 

13:10 (IST) - Australia shall look to pick up the last 3 wickets quickly so as to get a bat early on in the second day. England, on the other hand will look to stall the Aussies for as long as possible.

 

13:03 (IST) - In 2005, Glenn Mcgrath's five-wicket burst left England's top and middle order in shambles after Australia had been bowled out for just 190 on the first day of the Lord's Test.

 

12:45 (IST) - Weather update: Thursday was a scorcher. Weather in London today will continue to hover in the late 20s with a maximum temperature predicted to be 29C. It is currently 20C.

 

12:30 (IST) - On a pitch that was promised to be a belter and on which, 400 was considered a par-total, the Australian bowlers did well to claim seven wickets. Oz press lavished praise on Smith, explaining how he had the last laugh vs England.

Today, it is expected to be a question on how long the English tail can wag and if Steven Smith - 3 wickets from a day earlier - can further damage the batting with his raw leg-spin. This after Ian Bell's heroic century - his third straight in Ashes.
