The India-Netherlands match may not make much of an impact on the statistics of Group B in the World Cup but it will certainly give umpire Steve Davis a number to be pleased about. Steve Davis of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires will stand in his 100th One-Day International in Delhi, joining an exclusive club of officials who have been involved in that many matches.
Davis (58), who made his international debut on 12 December 1992 in a match between Pakistan and West Indies in Adelaide was shortlisted for LG ICC Umpire of the Year 2010 last year. He has also stood in 31 Tests and 14 Twenty20 Internationals so far and would be the 14th umpire to reach the feat.
A member of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires since 2008, Davis has continued to be one of the top match officials in the game and umpired at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2009. Davis will be presented with a memento to mark the occasion ahead of the start of today's game, by Ranjan Madugalle of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees.
"I am extremely proud and honoured to have reached this milestone. I can't quite believe that I am already at that landmark figure and it's fantastic to be reaching it at an ICC Cricket World Cup," said Davis.
"Since making my international debut as an umpire for my first ODI, I have enjoyed every moment, having the opportunity to officiate for some of the best teams in the world and be part of a sport I thoroughly enjoy. I have had the privilege to umpire some wonderful cricketers, and to stand with some great friends and colleagues.
"I feel proud to be joining a group of 13 men who have stood in more than 100 ODIs and amongst them the late, great David Shepherd as well as many of my current colleagues from the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires," added Davis.
"I'd like to thank my partner Annie, and all my family, especially my father, all whom have given me tremendous support over the years.
"I would also like to thank my umpiring colleagues, Cricket Australia and the ICC for the support they have and continue to provide me as I go about my umpiring career. I look forward to standing in many more ODIs in my career and continuing to be a part of this great game," he concluded.
Commenting on Davis' milestone, ICC Umpires' and Referees' Manager Vince van der Bijl said: "Steve is well respected and liked by his colleagues, the players and administrators for his humour, friendship, considerate nature as well as his professional approach to umpiring.
"He manages to strike that balance between enjoyment and dedication and applies the Laws and playing conditions with a firm hand and a touch of humour - a lovely balance appreciated by all on and off the field.
"We are delighted that he is being honoured and recognized umpiring in his 100th ODI."
