Stats Pack: Rutherford debut ton breaks many Test records

Hamish Rutherford scored a Test century on debut to put New Zealand in a commanding position after third day of the first Test against England in Dunedin on Friday. Here are few of the statistical highlights from the day's play.

# Hamish Rutherford's 171 is the second highest by a New Zealand player on Test debut, next only to Matthew Sinclair's 214 against the West Indies at Wellington in December 1999.

# Overall, nine hundreds have been recorded for New Zealand on Test debut. Jackie Mills, Mark Greatbatch and Rutherford are the three batsmen to have accomplished the feat against England.

# Rutherford's outstanding knock is the second highest by any player on Test debut against England, next only to George Headley's 176 for the West Indies at Bridgetown in January 1930.

# Rutherford has established a record as an opener on debut against England, surpassing Charles Bannerman's 165 not out for Australia in the first ever Test in cricket history at Melbourne in March 1877.

# Rutherford's innings is the seventh highest by a batsman on Test debut - the highest being Tip Foster's 287 for England against Australia at Sydney in December 1903.

# Rutherford's strike rate of 78.80 is the highest by any batsman on Test debut against England and the seventh highest overall in Tests. (minimum 100).  West Indian Dwayne Smith is the only one to register strike rate of 100 on Test debut - 105 not out off 105 balls - against South Africa at Cape Town in January 2004.

# James Anderson (4/108) enjoys an impressive record against New Zealand, capturing 31 wickets at an average of 24.45 in only six Tests.

# Peter Fulton (55) has recorded his second fifty in eleven Tests - his first being 75 off 162 balls against the West Indies at Wellington in March 2006.

# Fulton and Rutherford were involved in a stand of 158 - New Zealand's fourth highest for the first wicket against England - the highest being 276 between Dempster and Mills at Wellington in January 1930.

# England have conceded a first innings lead of 235.  In the 1973 Lord's Test, they had conceded 298 - the most to New Zealand. New Zealand had posted 551 for nine wickets declared in response to England's 253 in the first innings.
