On a day when James Anderson, followed by the other English bowlers, ripped through the Sri Lankan batting line-up, skipper Mahela Jayawardena showed solid resistance as Sri Lanka ended Day 1 of the 1st Test against England on 289 for the loss of 8 wickets.

On a day when James Anderson followed by the other English bowlers ripped through the Sri Lankan batting line-up, skipper Mahela Jayawardena showed some resistance and cool as Sri Lanka ended Day 1 of the 1st Test against England on 289 for the loss of 8 wickets. Following are the statistical highlights from Day 1:

# Mahela Jayawardena has become the first player to amass 2,000 runs or more at two venues in Tests, aggregating 2697 (ave.79.32), including ten hundreds and eight fifties, in 24 Tests at Colombo, SSC and 2100 (ave.84.00) in 19 Tests at Galle International Stadium, including seven centuries and nine fifties

# England's Graham Gooch was the first batsman to accomplish the feat of completing 2,000 runs at one venue, aggregating 2015 at an average of 53.02 in 21 Tests at Lord's.  South Africa's Jacques Kallis has managed 2098 at an average of 77.70 in 20 Tests at Newlands, Cape Town.  His tally includes nine hundreds and eight fifties.

# Jayawardena's superb unbeaten 168 is the third highest by a Sri Lankan batsman against England at Galle - the highest two innings are 213 not out by Jayawardene in  2007-08 and 201 not out by Marvan Atapattu in 2000-01.

# Mahela Jayawardena and Rangana Herath were associated in a eighth wicket partnership of 62 - Sri Lanka's highest against England, surpassing the 53 between Dharmasena and Vaas at Kandy in March 2001.

# James Anderson (3/56) has recorded his best bowling figures against Sri Lanka in Tests, bettering the 3 for 66 at Cardiff in May 2011.

# Anderson, during the course of his aforesaid performance, has completed his 250 wickets in Tests - 252 at an average of 30.32 in 67 Tests.

# Jayawardena's aforesaid innings is his 30th century in Tests - his seventh against England.

# Jayawardena became the first batsman to register 30 centuries for Sri Lanka in Tests.

# Jayawardena has recorded seven hundreds against England - a record in England-Sri Lanka Tests.  He has totalled 1852 runs at an average of 61.73 in 20 Tests against England.  He is the leading run-scorer in England-Sri Lanka Tests.

# Jayawardena's captaincy record is superb, totalling 3113 at an average of 70.75 in 29 Tests.  His average is the second best behind Sir Donald Bradman - 3147 at an average of 101.51 in 24 Tests (minimum 3000 runs).

# Kumar Sangakkara has posted his second duck against England - his sixth in Tests.
