Sharad Pawar is mulling contesting the Board of Control for Cricket in India elections. He is currently the president of Mumbai Cricket Association. Pawar was BCCI president from 2005 to 2008. The Member of Parliament has also been the president of International Cricket Council from 2010 to 2012. (Sharad Pawar, Jagmohan Dalmiya urged to take over BCCI mantle)
The BCCI elections have been postponed twice due to the Supreme Court hearing of the 2013 IPL betting and spot-fixing scandal. On January 22, the Supreme Court ordered that BCCI elections should be held within the next six weeks. With N. Srinivasan's candidature looking increasing doubtful due to his conflict of interest issues in Indian cricket, Pawar has emerged as a strong candidate.
This is the East Zone's turn to nominate a president. For Pawar to win, he must secure the votes of the majority of East Zone units of the BCCI. Earlier, most East Zone members had backed Srinivasan but the equations are fast changing. "It's not going to be an individual decision. We will sit and discuss together. I have health limitations due to an accident," said Pawar.
Pawar had earlier declined to contest since Srinivasan looked good to secure a second full term supported by East Zone members. But the Supreme Court order has upset Srinivasan's plans. Till at least February 14, Pawar will wait and watch how Srinivasan reacts to the court order. As usual, BCCI elections will see a dramatic lead-up with 31 units finally deciding who will be in the hot seat.
The BCCI may summon a working committee meeting on February 10 to formally give notice of the AGM, which must be held on or before March 5. The BCCI rulebook stipulates at least 21 days' notice for the AGM to be called. The working committee will have to meet latest by February 12 to finalise the date and venue.
