Darren Sammy had a lot of his players to praise after his team defeated Bangladesh by 9-wickets in their Pool A match on Friday. The West Indies skipper however chose to mention Chris Gayle foremost in the post-match press conference.
Appreciating Gayle's efforts in the match despite the southpaw not being in the pink of health, Sammy said the flamboyant left-hander showed good character. "He was not well but he chose to play. It shows what the World Cup means to us in the West Indies," he said. Gayle top-scored for his side with 37 runs that included 6 boundaries.
Though the match had stellar performances from the skipper himself along with man of the match Kemar Roach who took three wickets, Gayle's performance with the bat augers well for the Windies. The opener had made a disastrous start to his World Cup campaign against South Africa in which he scored all of 2 runs, but hit back with a vengeance against the Netherlands with an 80.
West Indies will now hope that he can take his form forward against relatively tougher opponents in England and India.
