Team India's 4-1 series win against England in the Test series saw several heroes emerge. The likes of Sarfaraz Khan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, Kuldeep Yadav, etc. performed really well as rookies while Ravichandran Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja were at their usual best. One name, however, that flew under the radar was that of skipper Rohit Sharma, who also made an important contribution to the series. Even India head coach Rahul Dravid pointed out that Rohit was shy to highlight his own contribution and let it slide under the carpet.
In 5 matches against England, Rohit scored 400 runs at an average of 44.44 and a strike-rate of 64.21. Rohit's best performance in the series came in the Rajkot Test where the India captain scored 131 in the first innings.
"It has been a pleasure watching him bat since I saw him as an 18-year-old. It is always pleasing to the eye. But I think he has added a lot of steel and grit to that. Sometimes, we forget that a little bit. Look at his numbers. He was shy enough not to mention the critical situation where he won the toss in Rajkot, and we were 3 down in the first hour. You need somebody to step up and get a hundred, and the captain does that for you," Dravid said in a chat on JioCinema.
Rohit didn't just score runs for India at important intervals but also led his troops magnificently as India secured a 4-1 series win against England.
"He has been terrific to watch; it is not easy to start as a middle-order player and then open. To do that consistently when we needed it, especially in the last three games, is a credit to him in spite of other things happening around him," Dravid further said.
