Young Bengal left-hander Sudeep Chatterjee missed out on a well-deserved double hundred but his sublime 192 laid the foundation of Bengal's formidable 455 in the first innings against Baroda on Day 2 of the Group A Ranji Trophy cricket match, here on Monday.
The elegant left-hander scored his maiden first-class hundred in his ninth match but showed real promise that he is one for the future.
At stumps, Baroda were reeling at 85 for three, still needing 220 runs to avoid the follow on.
Starting the day at 91, Sudeep duly completed his ton in the first hour and went onto add 156 for the fourth wicket with Shreevats Goswami (86).
He had 21 boundaries in the 303 balls that he faced. At the age of 21, the ability to bat for 7 hours and 42 minutes spoke volumes about his temperament.
He plays with an upright stance and has a good back-foot technique. He is comfortable playing shots on both sides of the wicket.
The youngster added another 108 runs with skipper Laxmi Ratan Shukla (46) for the fifth wicket. With Bengal looking well-placed at 408 for four, there was a sudden collapse as the next 6 wickets fell for an addition of 47 runs.
Left-arm spinner Swapnil Singh bagged a five-wicket haul but it was left-arm seamer Gagandeep Singh, who induced an edge off Sudeep's bat to Pinal Shah behind stumps.
When Baroda batted, it was skipper Shukla whose double pushed the hosts on the backfoot.
Brief Scores: Bengal 455 (Sudeep Chatterjee 192, Shreevats Goswami 86, Laxmi Ratan Shukla 46; Swapnil Singh 5-99)
Baroda 85/3 (Saurabh Wakaskar (24), Kedar Devdhar (32 not out); LR Shukla 2-4, Veer Pratap Singh 1-39).
