Karachi:
Latif said that he had submitted a proposal to the Board that they should help encourage the Afghanistan cricket team by giving them a ODI series against the Pakistan team.
"But the proposal has been turned down because the Board says the team is busy in the coming months," Latif said.
Latif is presently the batting coach of the Afghanistan team which surprised the cricket world, qualifying for the T20 World Cup in the West Indies this year and also attained the ODI team status by doing well in the ICC qualifying event during the last two years.
Rashid accompanied the Afghanistan team to Scotland for a match of the Intercontinental Cup where they achieved a thumping 229-run victory yesterday.
"The Afghani players are quick learners and in view of their recent performance, I can confidently say that they will be able to give a hard time to any teams in the world," Latif said.
The former wicketkeeper-batsman, who played 37 Tests and 168 ODIs, said that he was pleased to see that the Afghanistan players were learning quickly and understanding the value of staying at the wicket.
"Staying at the wicket is the key in any format of cricket and this is what the Afghani players are learning to do. They are learning the fundamentals of the game very fast and now my main aim is to acquire Test status for the Afghan team," he said.
Latif was appointed the batting coach of Afghanistan in July this year after another former Pakistan player Kabir Khan as head coach guided the Afghanis through to the final rounds of the T20 World Cup.
Latif, who runs his own cricket academy here, said that he would work on a plan to get a few of the Afghani players to get long term training and coaching at his academy which would help them adjust more quickly to the highest level of cricket.
In past also the PCB has played its role in supporting Afghanistan cricket by allowing their team to stay and train at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore and few years back had allowed their team to take part in the domestic grade two competition.
Two or three members of the Afghanistan's national team have also played domestic first class cricket in Pakistan for the Customs team.
